Introduction
ICTs are always
evolving and have been contributing immensely in development policies and
programmes in developing countries. Appropriate application of ICTs will help
the institutions, organizations, and nations in development plans. In spite of the
tremendous potential of ICTs, developing countries have not adapted a sound
strategy to utilize ICTs effectively. The application of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) in agriculture is increasingly important. If ICTs
are utilized fully in agriculture and allied fields, traditional knowledge
could be improved and farmers would benefit from this new technology.
E-Agriculture is
an emerging field focusing on the enhancement of agricultural and rural
development through improved information and communication processes. More
specifically, e-Agriculture involves the conceptualization, design,
development, evaluation, and application of innovative ways to use information
and communication technologies (IT) in the rural domain, with a primary focus
on agriculture. E-Agriculture is a relatively new term and we fully expect its
scope to change and evolve as our understanding of the area grows.
For the last few
years attempts have been made to publish the case studies of ICT projects
working towards agricultural and rural development. However, we could not find
any documents or research materials to analyze and study the impact of ICT on
farming community or the stakeholders.
ICT in the agriculture
sector must have a vision of a "Knowledge-Intensive Agriculture" that
may respond to the challenges of food security, sustainable development, and
the sustaining of farmer's revenue.
All stakeholders of agriculture industry need
information and knowledge about these phases to manage them efficiently. Any
system applied for getting information and knowledge for making decisions in
any industry should deliver accurate, complete, and concise information in time
or on time. The information provided by the system must be in user-friendly
form, easy to access, cost-effective, and well protected from unauthorized
accesses.
Weak linkages
among extension, research, marketing networks, and farmers limit the
effectiveness of research and extension to contribute to agriculture
development. This handbook on Information Communication Technology (ICT) will
analyze various initiatives in farm development to gain understanding about the
concept, implementation, and impacts as well.
A review of
literature has not been able to reveal any handbook that has addressed
different issues of ICT in Agriculture. This research handbook will also bridge
the literature gap as well.
Objective of the Book
This book aims
to provide most complete and reliable source of information on recent
advancements in the field of ICT in agriculture and rural development. There are no published evidences from the
developing countries to analyze the critical aspects of the application and use
of ICTs in rural development, particularly at grassroots level. Specifically,
the book will be a source book on ICT in Agriculture; be a guidebook to those
who are involved in ICT projects, adoptions, evaluations, and applications;
provide background information to scholars and researchers who are interested
in carrying out further research on ICT application in Agriculture and Rural
Development with necessary knowledge which they can impart to their trainees,
students, and farming community. This handbook will also try to generalize the
concepts of ICTs use based on the critical analysis of the ICT projects around
the world.
Target Audience
This book will
be essential reading for professionals, policy makers and non government
officials involved in the application of ICT in agriculture and extension
activities like Krishi Vigyan Kendras (agricultural extensions of universities
and government on farm development), teachers, academicians, researchers etc.
from different parts of the world. The publication will provide the audience
access to information that will help in advance research in ICT. It will enable
individuals to become acquainted with ICT application in the agriculture and
farm sector, which will then assist those concerned to use and adopt new and
appropriate technologies in farm sector. Moreover, this handbook will also
provide teachers, students, scholars, and researchers in the field of community
development, agriculture, and mass communication with useful material on
curricular offerings. It will enable different ICT users to apply ICTs for the
development of different areas of their lives.

Submission
Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to
submit on or before March 30, 2013, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining
the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted
proposals will be notified by April 30, 2013 about the status of
their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be
submitted by June 30, 2013. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a
double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as
reviewers for this project.

This
book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.),
publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group
